The picturesque town of Motta Sant Anastasia can be found in the Italian province of Cantina. It stands along the Etna Volcano and was built around a beautiful castle. There are no throngs of people, huge skyscrapers or freeways. It is almost too lovely to exist but nevertheless offers you an ideal place to retreat from the outside world.

The layout of the city helps create the charming ambiance that thrives here. Although much of the historic section of Motta Sant Anastasia are the highlight of any visitor to the city, they are all that remain of its past.

The Norman Castle was built back in 1070 and, as mentioned before, has become the center mark of the city. Its impressive tower can be seen from miles around and reminds visitors of the battles that took place here. Chiesa dell'Immacolata dates back even earlier than the castle. Its structure was created out of lava stones and the inside houses five amazing paintings that date back to the seventeenth century.

Jumping ahead one century, the Mother Church was built in the 1200s and experienced many revisions and updates over the years. The altarpiece, which is a 1500s Crucifix painting, attracts many guests. The highlight outside its doors is the beautiful bell tower. One other site worth including is the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio da Padova. The stained glass mosaics are breathtaking and a must for any art enthusiast.

If possible, try to visit during the month of August when you can take part of the Motta Sant Anastasia annual Fair. It is a great time to indulge in the local produce that thrives here. Almonds, olives and grapes flourish in the rich soil and they will be some of the finest you have ever had the pleasure of tasting.
