Budapest has experienced a great deal of change over its lifetime. The city’s architecture tells part of this history and is quite interesting to explore. Statue Park is a great way to see the some of these changes as grand statues, which used to populate the numerous city parks, have now been collected to this one place. Again, its history tells part of Budapest’s fascinating story. And although Budapest is dealing with combining western influences and traditional ways, it welcomes visitors with open arms and is eager to please their guests.

The city can be divided into two halves. The first is the Castle district, which is a hilly side on the western bank. Its most prominent structure is Buda Castle. It sits atop the hill where Budapest was founded and dates back to the 13th century. An entire day can be spent exploring or walking the grounds. And getting there is half the fun. You’ll enjoy taking the Funicular, a little cable car up the Castle Hill. Another area of interest on this side of Budapest is the Royal Palace, home to a fascinating museum.

Cross over the Danube River and enter the eastern half, known as Pest. The terrain here is more flat than the western bank. Sometimes considered the downtown of Budapest, you’ll find lots to see and do. A break from the inner-city area is the City Park. The monument to visit is located at Heroes’ Square. An empty coffin lies here as a memorial to those who rebelled against the authorities in 1956. Pest is home to various churches, concert halls and art museums.

Shopping in Budapest is an interesting experience. There are many markets to find a great bargain as you search for lace, porcelain figures or a memento to remember Budapest by. However, western fashion and brand names are infiltrating the main boulevards so you’ll be able to experience the best of both shopping worlds. If you do go to the markets you’ll be pleased by the numerous café’s that exist, a perfect place to try out an exotic Hungarian dish.

Hungary has begun to incorporate a bit of European flare in its cuisine over the past decade. A traditional meal is the goulash, but there are also great fresh fish dishes, and the goose liver. In order to experience a true Hungarian meal, locals say trying the liver is a must. Make sure you leave room for some delicious desserts. Also, Hungary is well known for its Apricot Brandy. Dining in Budapest is an experience you won’t soon forget.
