Munich what a fantastic place to visit. This cosmopolitan city has held on to its traditional roots, giving you a taste of a true German village. The locals are friendly, the local soccer team is outstanding, the sites will take your breath away, the cuisine is delicious and the beer, well, the beer is great. Munich, or Mnchen as its known locally, will quickly become one of your favorite places youve been to.
Where to begin If youre able to make it here in September and the beginning of October, chances are that youll hit the height of Oktoberfest season. This world-famous festival is a favorite for locals and tourists alike. Make your way to the Theresien Field where youll be treated to fantastic entertainment, traditional Bavarian food, great music and of course, a huge selection of beer. Although the beer is great, dont let that stop you from enjoying everything else Oktoberfest has to offer. If you arent able to make it to Munich during Oktoberfest, have no fear. There are lots of great pubs and beer halls that can give you a taste of the world famous festival. The Hofbruhaus, founded in 1589, is one of Munich's most popular tourist attractions. Youll experience a bit of Oktoberfest as you enjoy the delicious food in a great environment. Just note that tables marked as Stammtisch are reserved for regulars, which holds true for all Bavarian restaurants. You can sit there as long as you want, but you wont get served.
Enough of the beer and food. Munich is a fantastic city to visit for all the wonderful buildings that surround you. The architecture showcases some of the finest Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance designs throughout Europe. And you can easily explore these all by foot. But, if youre not too interested in taking up time walking to all the sites, Munich has a great public transportation system thats easy to use. It would be good to learn a few key German words though, just in case you get lost.
One of the most famous places in Munich is Marienplatz. This square is the starting point for many local festivals as well as home to the Rathaus. Building began for this striking town hall in 1867 and is over 300 feet in length. Its 260-foot tower as well as St. Peters Church, dominates the Munich skyline. St. Peters dates back to 1180 and is the oldest parish in Munich. It has a stunning interior worth exploring. If you can, make your way to the top where youll be treated to a great view of the city. Although Munich has many beautiful churches, another worth visiting is the Frauenkirche - Cathedral Church of Our Lady. The 15th century Gothic cathedral was beautifully restored after the bombings in 1945. Although the outside of this building is reason enough to come, inside youll find art that spans over five centuries.
Typical to most European cites Munich is also home to beautiful palaces. The Wittelsbachs is located in the heart of Munich and is a beautiful example of Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo design. The Nymphenburg Palace, once used as a summerhouse for the Bavarian royalty, is now open to the public. Its landscape alone is worth a visit.
The Deutsches Museum is the worlds largest science and technology museum. Although Munich is filled with fantastic art galleries and other museums, this one is a definite must. There are over 10 miles worth of exhibits with over 17,000 items on display. You could spend your entire vacation here. Although with everything else Munich has to offer, you should try to decide ahead of time what youd like to see at this fantastic museum so that you dont.
When youre ready to enjoy the natural beauty that exists in Munich, make your way to the Englischer Garten. Located along the banks of the Isar River and stretching over 900 acres of beautiful land, this garden is one of the largest city parks in all of Europe. Go into a local deli and make yourself a picnic and enjoy a great afternoon at one of the many picnic sites or rent a boat and explore the Kleinhesseloher See. If you dont like picnics, you can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the restaurants and cafs located throughout. The park is also filled with many fantastic sites, which include castles, the Chinese pagoda and Hellabrunn zoo. If youre thirsty for a great beer, not to worry. There are four beer gardens located throughout the park.
And after a long day of sightseeing, you can catch your breath at one of the many beautiful gardens that are located throughout the city. Or, if youve seen all that Munich has to offer, take some time and do a little shopping. The Neuhauser Strasse and Kaufinger Strasse are great for department stores whereas the Maximilian Strasse is the location for many galleries, boutiques and jewelry shops. The Virtualienmarkt, Munich's famous open-air market, is a perfect place to try some of the fantastic baked goods, like Strudel, or locally made cheeses. And after a long day of shopping, sit at one of the many cafs and enjoy a fantastic cup of coffee as you look at the stunning architecture that surrounds you.
