Getting to Frankfurt isn’t too difficult. It’s a major transportation hub, having the second largest airport in Europe as well as one of its busiest train stations. Deciding to explore Frankfurt isn’t too difficult either. It’s filled with exciting sites and you can cross the city by foot in about 30 minutes, making it an ideal place to explore everything it has to offer.
The skyline in Frankfurt is a mixture of 18th century buildings and state of the art skyscrapers. Left with the aftermath of World War II, it needed to rebuild from the ground floor. And although a few of the original buildings are still peppered throughout the city, you’ll be impressed with the museums, galleries and shopping malls that have been created to fill the empty spaces.
Most of the sites worth exploring are easily within walking distance to one another. The starting point for most is Romerberg, the historic center of the city. There are beautiful parks located throughout this area. While here, you should visit the Roemer, Kaiserdom and the Paulskirche. The Roemer is Frankfurt’s City Hall. It has an impressive banquet hall and provides insight to how Frankfurt used to look before World War II. The Kaiserdom, also known as the Church of St. Bartholomew, is an impressive cathedral where many German emperors and kings were crowned. Because of its unique red sandstone façade, its one of Frankfurt’s most recognized buildings. Today it houses a unique collection of Gothic carvings. The first National Assembly of Germany met in the historic Paulskirche back in 1848. You’ll also find a few guardhouses in Romerberg, serving as landmarks. Close to here is the Museumsufer. Frankfurt has close to 40 museums, and each one is unique and worth exploring. In fact, the museums in Frankfurt are a favorite for art lovers across the world.

Frankfurt is also a favorite for those who love to shop. The Zeil is Frankfurt's busiest shopping street. Its two bookends are the Hauptwache and Konstablerwache streets. For higher end stores and jewelry, you’ll want to stay near the Hauptwache side. Check out the side streets in this area as well for the latest fashion trends. For those who prefer to do a bit more economical shopping, the Konstablerwache has a great selection of stores that won’t break your bank. There’s also a great flea market held on Saturdays along the Main River.
Filled with traditional and exotic meals, the Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, known locally as the Fressgasse, is filled with markets, bakeries and fantastic places to grab a bit to eat. The streets are lined with beautiful old buildings and it’s a perfect place to enjoy a night on the town.
For those who enjoy music, Frankfurt has a huge selection of venues. If you like symphonies you’ll want to make your way to the Alte Oper, the city's beautiful concert hall. Frankfurt’s ballet, opera and theater groups perform at the Stadtische Buhnen. If you prefer more lively entertainment you’ll enjoy the performances at the Tigerpalast, which hosts magicians, acrobats and the like.
Frankfurt is truly one of Europe’s busiest cities. And although the city may be used as a pit stop for some making their way around the world, it’s worth the trip all on its own. Enjoy the delicious meals, explore world-class museums or catch a show. Whatever you decide, you’ll love strolling along the cobblestone streets and seeing this bustling city up close.
