Few women and few hotels have ever looked quite as beautiful as Grace Kelly descending the Carlton Hotel’s curving central staircase in the 1954 Hitchcock thriller “To Catch a Thief.” The combination of celebrity glamour and old-world luxury remains at the French Riviera icon on Cannes’ main stretch of beach and the palm-lined Boulevard de la Croisette. The Carlton is as much the spirit of Cannes -- past and present -- as is the film festival and is probably even more celebrated. The twin domes on either end of the façade facing the Bay of Cannes are recognized by travelers and film buffs around the world and are said to have been modeled after the breasts of the city’s most fabled courtesan, La Belle Otero. Off-season visits can garner better rooms, lower prices and more space on the beach, if fewer celebrities and the accompanying paparazzi. But go ahead and splurge. Given the Carlton’s age – it was constructed in 1912 -- and European ancestry, the guest rooms and bathrooms can be very small. Higher-end rooms include a pillow menu, flat screen televisions and a marble bathroom with l’Occitaine’s products made in nearby Provence. The rooms were renovated in 1990 so that luxurious European appointments are standard. Repeat visitors report that the most spacious rooms are in the west wing, while many of the upper-floor rooms open onto balconies fronting the sea. All rooms come with coffee maker, mini bar and the usual hotel supplies. Premium services include a butler, valet and morning newspaper delivery.
