Manchester

Manchester is a city surrounded by fantastic scenery. It is surrounded by lush greenery, flowing rivers, flat plains and rolling hills. It is a city whose impact on the arts, music and education has made it one of the country’s best cities to discover. The miles of gardens and open spaces invite you to enjoy the countryside while the number of soccer pitches only attest to the fact that this is one soccer-lovin’ town. How can they not be considering they are home to the Manchester United football club?

The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is an absolute must, even if you are not an avid museum enthusiast. Spreading over seven acres, it is comprised of five buildings, one of which is an historic railway station. The exhibits and galleries are absolutely fantastic, which helps explain why so many love to explore all that it has to offer. One of the finest art collections in all of Britain can be found in Manchester Art Gallery. It includes great art works as well as many exhibitions. Bookworms, or those who simply appreciate literature, will enjoy visiting the John Rylands University Library. Housing one of the best collections of printed materials in all of Europe, you will truly come to appreciate the legacy of the literature available.

One of Manchester’s most recognized attractions is the Urbis. Although the exhibitions inside are the main reasons to come, the building they are housed in is also worth your while. The glass exterior catches your eye miles before you arrive. Inside are fantastic exhibits showcasing cities from around the world. This ultra hip museum is a wonderful way to learn more about the world around you. The Manchester Town Hall is a beautiful building that depicts the Victorian era. Its murals, created by Ford Maddox Brown, are also great reasons to come.

Another famous Manchester site is its impressive Cathedral. The medieval artwork, stained glass displays and architecture welcome guests from all over. If you have the time, find a seat and listen to the impressive choral music that is sure to sooth your soul. Close to the Cathedral lies its visitor centre. Here, you can learn about the church’s history or enjoy a meal at the fantastic restaurant.

Speaking of restaurants, the Old Wellington Inn and Restaurant is the oldest pub in all of Manchester. It first opened its doors back in 1552 and has generations of loyal customers who come for the ambiance, great food and frosty pints. Manchester’s China Town is another must do while visiting. It seems no matter where you go in Manchester, there are countless options for your dining pleasure. Whatever your taste buds are craving, you can find it here.

No trip to England would be complete without indulging in a little (or a lot of) shopping. Manchester has gained a reputation for being the place to spend your moola. Manchester Arndale, located in the heart of the city, and Trafford Centre, just on the outskirts, are two malls you will want (need) to see. The Area known as the Triangle has an elite following, as does King Street. The city centre houses great stores along its streets and the Royal Exchange Centre is a treat for everyone. One side note about the city centre stores –– it is best to leave your car at home when exploring the area known as the Market Street. Parking here will probably give you a headache and you will need to save your energy for all of those stores. Another pedestrian friendly area is Deansgate. Its famous landmark is the House of Fraser, formally known as Kendals.

Check out the G-Mex if you are interested in catching a show while here. This revamped railway station is the place to catch fantastic concerts, sporting events and other great shows. You can also watch a performance at the impressive Manchester Evening News Arena. Seating over 21,000 guests at a time, you can imagine the headliners that grace its stage. In fact, it is one of the largest arenas in all of Europe.

Spend a night in Manchester and you will soon find out why their clubs are so legendary. It should come as no surprise that there are a lot of clubs for you to groove at. Manchester has quite a music legacy. Some of the many groups that hail from Manchester include the Bee Gees, the Mindbenders, Oasis, the Chameleons and New Order… just to name a few. Some of the clubs worth your while include Danceteria, Manto’s Breakfast Club, Home and Bowlers. If you only have time for one venue though, make your way to Band on the Wall. Located in the northern section of the city, this live music venue is an amazing place to catch up and coming artists. Whatever your style of music, you can enjoy it in Manchester.

Manchester is a fantastic city to enjoy Britain’s culture. It has had a pulse on the times since its inception. Today, you can look back on its past, enjoy the trends of today or see what the future may bring.

Moved to the city (Manchester) after residing in a rural area for 20 years and it has been a massively positive life changing experience. Meeting new and interesting people with a fantastic attitude to life. New social circles every week if you want.
