The city of Birmingham began as a small village over 1,000 years ago. Its humble beginnings though were the foundation for the important role it played in the Industrial Revolution. Unfortunately, the destruction that occurred during WWII left much of Birmingham in shambles. Although it has been rebuilt, it will not have the same appeal as a ‘traditional’ English city. However, what it may lack in typical English architecture it more than makes up in its impressive nightlife, fantastic museums and legendary cultural attractions. In fact, Birmingham is gaining quite the reputation for being one of England’s best cities to enjoy the performing arts. Another atypical attraction are the canals that flow through the city. The locals are proud that they have more canals than Venice, although you won’t find any Gondolas here.
The Bull Ring originated back in 1154 as a cattle and food market. Today it stands as one of the most visited areas in all of Birmingham. It has transformed itself over the ages into an impressive location that features one of the best shopping centers in all of England. You would need to spend a few days here in order to visit all the stores. Just make sure you wear good shoes. Other interesting sites found at the Bull Ring include the St. Martin’s Church and the Selfridges Building. The later looks like it was transported down from space. It is a fantastic store whose exterior is lined with aluminum-like discs. Very cool. St. Martin’s Church is one of the original churches in Birmingham and stands as an exact opposite to the futuristic style of the Selfridges Building. Those interested in shopping without limits will want to visit the Mailbox. This Birmingham shopping district is known for showcasing expensive labels. Everyone knows that a diamond is a girl’s best friend and the Jewellery Quarter is the place to reacquainted with old friends. Whether you are simply window shopping or interested in how these creations are made, you will quickly see why Birmingham has a great reputation for its workmanship.
The Museum and Art Gallery has done an impressive job with providing guests an interesting selection of displays and exhibits. Small wonder why over one million visitors walk through its doors every year. If possible, visit the Gas Hall and the Edwardian Tea Room. Although the St. Philip’s Cathedral may not stand out compared to some other famous churches it nevertheless attracts visitors ever year. It is a charming church whose stained glass windows are reason enough to come. Most were destroyed during WWII but a little foresight from the locals removed a few and stored them in a mineshaft for safekeeping. Birmingham is also the place to have your convention. The National Exhibition Center hosts close to two hundred events every year and is one of the largest buildings of its kind in all of the UK. Whether you are attending a headliner concert or the world’s biggest dog show, the NEC is a great place to catch a performance.
Birmingham has created many places for you to also stop and relax. Although the sites are definitely worth seeing, sometimes it is just nice to read a book or catch with some friends. There are close to 150 parks in Birmingham. Each one is beautiful and well maintained. One of the largest is Sutton Park. Spreading over 2400 acres, it is also one of the largest urban parks in Europe. Other areas you can relax at are the numerous public squares located throughout the city. Of course, most of them are also lined with quaint restaurants and trendy cafes. The Chamberlain Square is easily recognizable by its Memorial Fountain, Central Library, and Museum and Art Gallery. Centenary Square is another popular site located in the heart of Birmingham. One of its most visited sites is the War Memorial. Victoria Square houses one of the largest fountains in all of Europe. You will know you have arrived once you spot the statue of Queen Victoria.

The Birmingham area can also provide you with nature that has a bit more action to it. The National Sea Life Center is an amazing aquarium filled with exotic fish. Another great attraction here is its Rainforest – just keep your eyes open for the poison dart frogs. The West Midland Safari and Leisure Park provides you with the opportunity to drive through the wilderness and gaze at the creatures that call it home. Its Georgian house is another great site. Other attractions include the Seal Aquarium, Discovery Trail, Hippo Lakes plus much more. Perhaps you have had enough of all of this nature. Try surrounding yourself with chocolate then. A trip to Cadbury World will let you do that. Although this is not a Disney type of attraction, it is a good idea to book ahead of time so that you can avoid the long lineups to get in. I guess there is a chocoholic in every group. After you have indulged in a little chocolate you can head back home to enjoy a great meal. You are on vacation so why not have your dessert before your supper? There are many types of restaurants for you to choose from but Birmingham is particularly famous for its Indian Balti restaurants.
The events that take place in Birmingham are yet another reason to come to this English city. Its largest is the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Interestingly enough, it comes just behind Dublin’s as one of Europe’s largest events celebrating St. Patty. Another fantastic event is the BBC Good Food Show. Those interested in a more sophisticated event will truly appreciate an organ performance by the city’s designated organist. Although this may not mean much to any rock ‘n’ rollers out there, Birmingham is one of the few cities in the UK to have this designation. Now for those seeking a bit more percussion in their music, Birmingham has a great selection of clubs for you to enjoy, especially along Broad Street.
Birmingham is a welcomed alternative when touring England’s countryside. Whether you spend your days touring the sites or relaxing at one of its many parks, go shopping or eat at a Balti, you will love every minute you spend here.
