Québec City is Canada’s oldest city and thus, you will be treated to fantastic architecture wherever you go. It sits proudly along the beautiful St. Lawrence River. One of the ways you might arrive is by a cruise ship. The Québec City Port and terminal is reason enough to come but once you step outside those gates you are transported into a completely different world. The French culture also thrives here creating a taste of Europe right in North America.
Although Old Québec receives a lot of attention the entire city is laced with interesting sites. Museums, quaint cafes, fantastic restaurants, great boutiques and impressive historic buildings can be found at almost every corner. The 19th century Parliament Buildings are absolutely beautiful. Whether you see only the exterior or take one of the guided tours you will be thoroughly impressed with the creativity and attention to detail that was given during its construction. A few of the many museums worth visiting include the Musée de la Civilisation and the Musée national de beaux-arts du Québec.
There are of course many fantastic hotels located throughout the city but the Château Frontenac is by far one of the most majestic hotels you have ever seen. Even if you are not a guest it is worth visiting. Nearby this legendary hotel sits the Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral, which was one of the first cathedrals to have been built in North America. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the stunning Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. Some arrive to see the impressive architecture and others come for a time of prayer and reflection. Whatever your reason may be it will be a visit you will not soon forget. You might be surprised to find that Québec City houses one of the largest military structures in all of North America. The Citadelle’s unique star-shaped structure took over 30 years to build and continues to stand strong today.

Jacques-Cartier Valley and River can be found just north of Québec City and is a great place to enjoy some the beautiful nature that surrounds the city. One of the must see outdoor attractions though are the impressive Montmorency Falls. Wherever you stop to catch a view is the perfect place to take a photo. The suspension bridge is a fun, unique experience and does give you an up close view of these majestic falls. A cable car ride to the top provides you with another great experience.
Québec City hosts numerous celebrations, festivals and events throughout the year. Two of the more popular ones are Saint-Jean Baptiste Day and Winter Carnival. Saint-Jean Baptiste Day is Québec City ’s birthday but it seems that everyone who attends is the birthday boy or girl. The Winter Carnival is one of the biggest throughout the world. Although the snow is on the ground people come out by the thousands every day to partake in the great festivities. Parades, delicious food, concerts, ice sculpture contests and much more entertain the guests year after year. Keep your eyes open for Bonhomme Carnaval, the official mascot for the event.
Québec City definitely provides you with a healthy dose of Europe, minus the 12-hour flight and jet lag. What are you waiting for... should I say Qu'attendez-vous?
