Yellowknife is the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories. Although the winters can be a tad cold and the summers a wee bit short, it is a city filled with exciting adventures. Ideally located along the Great Slave Lake and surrounded by fantastic scenery you will find that adventure awaits you here.
Old town is lined with historic buildings, many of which have been carefully preserved. It is here that you can also enjoy a bird’s eye view of the entire city at the top of Bush Pilot’s Monument. Perhaps you would rather see the nature up close. Yellowknife has a plethora of outdoor activities whatever time of year you visit. Go fishing (with a license), snowmobiling, canoeing, hiking... the list goes on and on. Yellowknife is also quickly becoming the place to go for diamonds.
Celebrating the end of winter is a big deal in Yellowknife. The annual Caribou Carnival, held during the last weekend in March, does exactly that. Concerts, dog races and lots of exciting activities help make this party one to remember. June 21 marks the Raven Mad Daze event. This party is held in honor of the longest day of the year, which means you could go golfing well past your normal bedtime. Winter has its fair share of exciting events as well. The Snow King Festival is an impressive collection of ice sculptures, including a fantastic ice castle. Remember to pack your sunglasses. The glare from the sun off of the snow can be pretty intense. The winter nights give you an amazing opportunity to watch the Aurora lights dance across the dark skies. This is a definite must and a real treat for the entire family. Just make sure you bundle up.

If you are visiting during the summer and only have time to enjoy one meal in Yellowknife make a stop at the legendary Wildcat Café. This log cabin has been around for a long time. Although the ownership and menus have changed over the years it is still the place to share stories and listen to tales of the past. Yukon enjoy a fantastic time here. I know, terribly corny but oh so funny.
