Situated along the Assiniboine River, Portage La Prairie is a growing town where agriculture became the reason for its beginnings. Although there is much to see and do, no visit to Portage La Prairie would be complete without a trip to the U-pick strawberry farms. There is just nothing better than enjoying a freshly picked berry.
Fort La Reine is a historic site worth exploring. Showcasing what life was like in the 1800s you can roam around the blacksmith shop, trading post, restored homes, school and church. It definitely makes you appreciate the luxuries we find to be the norm today. One of Portage La Prairie’s biggest drawing cards though is Island Park. Although not a true island this fantastic park is filled with great activities. Go golfing, water skiing, play a few games of tennis or enjoy the picnic areas. Once the snow falls you can go cross-country skiing. The Island also gets covered with Christmas lights, creating a fantastic winter wonderland.
