One of the first things you will appreciate about Alberta is its dedication to preserving the nature that thrives throughout the province. Whether the parks are small urban getaways in the larger cities or impressive national parks, you can experience this nature up close. Fort Edmonton Park first began as a Hundson’s Bay Company fur trading post and stands today as a tribute to its humble beginnings. The Dinosaur Provincial Park is home to some of the very best dinosaur finds around the globe. Jasper and Banff are both provincial parks as well. The summer months treat you to amazing hiking and biking trails whereas the winter months convert them into some of the finest ski hills you will ever have the pleasure of experiencing. Coming during the off seasons are worthwhile as well, especially in the autumn where you will be treated to beautiful fall foliage. Keep your eyes open for the various four-legged friends who call these parks home. The elk are even known for causing a few traffic jams as they meander through the towns. It is quite a sight to see. Although the wildlife and nature are reasons enough to come, each of these provincial parks house incredible resorts sure to please even the most experienced traveler.
Although nature is one of Alberta’s biggest drawing cards the other is its shopping. It is home to one of the world’s largest shopping and entertainment complexes. The West Edmonton Mall will please any kind of shopper. For those not interested in exploring over 800 stores you can always watch a movie, go skating, enjoy a few amusement park rides, try your luck at the casino or even see a dolphin show. It is all housed under one gigantic roof for you to experience. Another great shopping area can be found in Calgary’s Old Strathcona. Restored buildings now house boutiques and bookstores. Its streets are lined with buskers and the Farmer’s Market is filled with great items all at a fantastic price.
What else does Alberta have to offer? Explore the Heritage Park Historical Village or the Grand Prairie’s Museum Grouping and see what life was like for the first settlers. Or, you could see one of Canada’s most popular architectural landmarks and visit the Calgary Tower. It is quite easy to find considering it stands at over 620 feet tall. Alberta is also well known for its incredible festivals. There are smaller parties, such as Lake Louise’s Spring Episode, and huge events like the world famous Calgary Stampede. Whatever you are in the mood for there is an event that is just perfect for you. They offer fantastic BBQs, live entertainment and great shows.
