Ever since the 21-year-old Earl Scruggs took to the stage on the Ryman in 1945 to play the five-string banjo with a three-finger roll, it’s been thought of as the birthplace of bluegrass music. And in homage to this style and its country music heritage, each year the venue hosts Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman offering visitors the chance to practice their boot scooting whilst listening to some top-class musicians perform. As the home of the Grand Ole Opry country radio show from 1943 to 1974, the venue itself is sacred amongst country music fans that often refer to the Ryman as the “Mother Church of Country Music”
