A free outdoor classical music festival, the Grant Park Music Festival was founded in 1935 to allow people of all backgrounds access to orchestral performances. This is both a critically-acclaimed festival and a highly popular one. The audience take their places on a first come, first served basis and many bring picnic baskets to feast al fresco. There are about 35 free concerts to choose from with details normally announced a couple of months before the event. Concerts are generally performed on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, and occasionally on Sundays. The Festival also presents nearly 60 concerts in neighbourhood parks between July and mid-August
