Made up of a number of events that take place over several months, the festival celebrates the contributions made by Hispanics to the cultural and economic development of the US and aims to share Hispanic traditions and folklore with residents and visitors to Miami. The events programme was first held in 1973 and has grown every year since and now includes a popular beauty pageant, poster contest, gala ball, golf classic, domino tournament and Hispanic heritage essay contest. One of the most popular events is the Discovery of America Day, an outdoor music and food festival which includes top Latin performers and folkloric groups from Spain and Latin America. There are also numerous events for children and an art and crafts fair
