Free Madison, WI Music Events - July 08
I've been away from my post for awhile. Okay, for longer than a while...for most of a year. So I just want to refresh some of the great --- FREE --- musical activities in and around Madison for the month of July.
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES at Warner Park, Mondays at 6pm
(Sponsored by North/Eastside Senior Coalition)
July 14 - Kydd and Byrd
July 21 - Que Flavor
July 28 - The Midwesterners
LUNCH TIME LIVE on the King Street Corner of the Capitol Square, Tuesdays noon-1pm
July 1 - The German Art Students
July 8 - Lucas Cates Band
July 15 - Aaron Williams and the Hoodo
July 22 - Cash Box Kings
July 29 - David Hecht & Primitive Culture
CONCERTS IN THE GARDEN - Olbricht Garden, Tuesdays at 7pm
Okay, so these are not exactly free. They'd like a $1 donation. But in today's economy, that's as good as free.
July 1 - Madison Municipal Band - Marches & Patriotic Melodies
July 8 - Claudia Russell - Eclectic Folk
July 15 - Calico Drifters - Americana, Blues, Folk & Jazz
July 22 - Lou & Peter Berryman - Original Folk Humor
July 29 - Antimevu - African Drums and Dance
CONCERTS ON THE SQUARE - Wednesdays at 7pm
July 2 - Salute to America (with the coolest 1812 Overture with real cannons!)
July 9 - Sound the Trumpet
July 16 - Songs Without Words
July 23 - String Fusion
July 30 - Our Town
The concerts are free, on the State Capitol Lawn. Plan to get there early. Only blankets and the shorter beach chairs are allowed on the lawn itself; full size lawn chairs can be set up on the outer sidewalk areas. If you can't get there early, don't worry, there's almost always squeeze-in space. Most people bring picnic foods and libations, but there are plenty of food and drink vendors for people who like to be spontaneous.
CHASE CONCERETS ON THE ROOFTOP - Monona Terrace, Thursdays 6-8pm
Concessions (sandwiches, snacks, beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks) are available for purchase beginning at 5:30PM. No carry-ins.
July 10 - Clyde Stubblefield Band - Funk/Rhythm & Blues.
July 17 - Mama Digdown's Brass Band - New Orleans Jazz
July 24 - Queenie & the Blue Cats - Blues
SOUNDS OF SUMMER CONCERT SERIES at Greenway Station in Middleton, Saturdays 6-7pm
Bring a chair or blanket and check out weekly live performances by top local musicians.
July 5 - Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Band
July 12 - OD TAPO IMI
July 19 - The Westside Andy/Mel Ford Band
July 26 - The Lucas Cates Band
OPERA IN THE PARK - Saturday, July 26, 8pm
Garner Park at the corner of Mineral Point Rd. and Rosa Rd. Bring appetizers and libations-and LOTS of mosquito repellent. People are putting their blankets down earlier and earlier, some even in the a.m. Dress rehearsal is the night before; some people go to that if they can't make the official performance. Plan to pony up for a glow-in-the-dark nightstick so you can help direct the orchestra.
HOT SUMMER NIGHTS at the Memorial Union
Most nights - check out their schedule at http://www.union.wisc.edu/music/
These events are intended for UW-Madison students, faculty, staff, & Union members and guests, which means you have to be one of the above to buy beer. But anybody can sit and listen.
