Sun Prairie Corn Fest - Sweet Corn for a Sweet Time!

What are the four major food groups in Wisconsin?

Cheese . . . brats . . . corn . . . and beer!

Cheese is so common you can pick it up anywhere, in any grocery store,  order it added on to any item in any restaurant anytime. Cheese to a native Wisconsinite is like the air you breathe.

And, for that matter. . . so is beer.

But brats and corn. . . well, that's an all together different situtation.

While in theory brats can be had year round, the best ones are those simmered over a charcoal fire on a hot summer day (if you're cooking them yourself, try soaking them in beer first! And then, of course, smother them in cheese.)

And I've already mention the Memorial Day and Labor Day Brat Fests on Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center in a previous post (check the May postings).

But homegrown Wisconsin sweet corn on the cob is only available for a few short weeks-maybe a month at the most-toward the end of summer.  And there is nothing better than a hot cob of Wisconsin sweet corn dripping in butter and sprinkled with salt.  Ideally you want to savor this delicacy with a grilled brat dripping in cheese and chased down by a home grown Wisconsin draft.

But if you are willing to take your sweet corn a la carte, try the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival this weekend at Sun Prairie's Angell Park.

When: Corn served Sat. Aug. 18 & Sun. Aug. 19  from noon to 7pm.

Festival activities - Thurs. through Sun.

Where: Angell Park, Sun Prairie (near the intersection of Hwys 19 & N.)

Cost:  $1 admission (per person) and $1.50 per ear of steamed corn

Parking: $5  per vehicle (includes free admission for everyone in the vehicle)

And what's a Wisconsin festival without a beer tent and tons of family-friendly entertainment? You can find it all at the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival: A parade (Thurs., 6:30pm, Sun Prairie Main St.), a carnival midway, live bands, crafts show, petting zoo, and a Kiddie Korner with inflatable play structures, face-painting, and mini-golf.
