Concerts on the Square - Musical Summer Evenings in Madison
One of the special treats of summer in Madison are the Wednesday evening "Concerts on the Square." The ambiance is incredible. The music superb.
These free concerts, performed by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra with director Andrew Sewell, are held on the State Capitol Lawn every Wednesday at 7:00pm from June 27 - Aug. 1.
But you had better plan to get there early --- attendance typically numbers around 20,000 people each week! Hubby and his friend Bob generally set our blankets down at 3 in the afternoon. Their ritual is to sit, visit, read, snooze, and drink beer until the rest of the family arrives in time for a picnic dinner. Only blankets and the shorter beach chairs are allowed on the lawn itself. Full size lawn chairs can be set up on the outer sidewalk areas. If you can't get there early, don't worry, there's almost always squeeze-in space.
And plan to bring dinner! Most people bring picnic foods and wine. But there are plenty of food and drink vendors for people who like to be spontaneous.
The July 4th concert will have a "Stars and Stripes" theme. One of the highlights of this concert is always Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" with live cannons being fired.
July 11 - Russian Folktales
July 18 - Caribbean Beat
July 25 - Eye of the Storm
Aug. 1 - Streets of Paris
