3 Great Madison Restaurants to Tantalize Homestyle Tastebuds
When our college-age son arrived home after a year studying in Japan, we asked what he was hungry for in terms of good ol' "American" fare. His answer was immediate and direct: Real pizza, authentic Mexican food, and a big, juicy hamburger. Not all at once of course. And, okay, so Mexican isn't "American," but it also isn't Japanese (which he loves, but he was definitely missing food from home.)
It was easy to satisfy his long-awaited cravings right here in Madison.
For American style pizza you can't beat Rocky Rococo's pan style pizza with it's thick crust and variety of yummy, cheesy toppings. The Madison location closest to us is at Westgate Mall. You can eat in and enjoy the salad bar, or carry out pizza by the slice. I counted 8 Rocky sites throughout Madison and you can find them all listed on their website --- http://www.rockyrococo.com.
When it comes to providing authentic Mexican food, Madison is no slouch. There are numerous Mexican-owned and Mexican-style restaurants --- all of them wonderful, each distinct. But our favorite is Cancun (704 S. Whitney Way). The waitstaff is always friendly and the service is relaxed but efficient. The food ...? Muy bueno! Fantastico!!
For a big, juicy American hamburger? It's off to the Nitty Gritty, no questions asked. Our favorite location is down near campus and the Kohl Center (223 N. Frances St.) where there's always a party going on. But there's also a far Westside location (1021 N. Gammon Rd.). You can check out the Nitty Gritty website at: http://www.nittygrittybirthdayplace.com/ to get a glimpse of the other offerings on their menu.
So...when your tastes run to classic American and/or Mexican fare, Madison has lots of choices. But these are our favorites.
