Whidbey Island Farm Tour
What a great blustery October day we had on Whidbey Island (and hour and a half out of Seattle by ferry from Mukilteo) last Saturday. The rain held off as we did the Whidbey Island farm tour and were able to look at 8 farms on the mid to north end of the island. (We just didn't have time for the ones on the south end.) We were able to see the Case Farm in Oak Harbor - a 109 year old farm. We enjoyed the peacocks and turkeys. Island Bliss Alpacas was sweet and we watched fleece being spun into yarn while military planes from Oak Harbor flew overhead. Hummingbird Farm Nursery near Coupeville has a great gift shop, gardens and they have built a new barn to be used as an event center. Lavender Wind Farm near Coupeville has a heavenly scented gift shop and we watched lavender being distilled into essential oil. 3 Sisters Cattle Company on Monroe Landing Road raises grass-fed-beef for local retail. Sherman's Pioneer Farm Produce on Ebey Road was selling home made pies, giving trolley rides to the pumpkin patch and had adorable kittens to watch. Rosehip Farm and Garden was a beautiful farm with an old farmhouse and building, dahlia gardens, growing over thirty vegetables for their CSA (community supported agriculture program).
We had lunch at Tobys Tavern in Coupevillle http://www.tobysuds.com/ where we had a long wait for lunch but everyone enjoyed the world famous Penn Cove mussels when they arrived. Greenbank Farm "on the skinny part of the island" is the icing on the cake, or pie in this instance. Their restaurant has fantastic pies (and great breakfast we heard), they also have a wine shop, cheese shop, trails, event center. They found their perfect crop in loganberry's in the early 1900's. I will be looking forward to opening my bottle of Greenbank Farm loganberry wine sometime soon.
Thanks for the great day sisters, brother-in-law and husband!
