Soliciting Readers' DC Favorites

For this blog posting, I'm not going to tell you about any of DC's gems or goings-on.  Instead, I'd like you to send me your favorite things to do and see in the Washington area, places to visit, eat, shop and sleep here, as well as any other local gems you've discovered in your peripatetic forays into our nation's capital.  I call this approach "Interactive Blogging."

This call for input is motivated not ...

Bethesda's Restaurant Week Jan. 22-28

Much like D.C.'s popular Restaurant Week, many of Bethesda's top restaurants are offering 3 course meals for lunch and dinner at special rates. Unlike D.C.'s set $20.07 (lunch) and $30.07 (dinner) prices, Bethesda's restaurants set their prices in a wider range. $12-$20 will get you a 3 course lunch, while $20-35 will buy you a multi-course dinner. This allows greater flexibility for consumers who are watching their spending as well as ...

Navigating DC in the Snow

It doesn't snow all too often in Washington. When it does (as it did yesterday and today), drivers dance around embankments and public transportation may become more difficult. In spite of possible delays, I think Metro is the way to go in inclement weather.

In the worst weather, Metro rail switches to an all-underground system. This means that many of the lines are nipped, and the Yellow line is almost entirely ...

Just strollin'

First-time visitors to the DC area often fail to appreciate the enormity of the National Mall, until they experience it firsthand.

End to end, the Mall is something like 2 miles long, one way. Couple this with the fact that the museums aren't separate from the rest of Washington; it's all right there, musuems, business, government, residental. You can start to understand why parking downtown is next to impossible, and you'll see that you're probably going to ...

Free local D.C. newspapers

When visiting D.C., you should be sure to pick up a copy of at least one of the many free newspapers offered around the city. The Washington Post's Express is a weekday daily that is laid-out in a compact magazine-like format that makes it convenient for urban commuters to read while jammed between their neighbors on the bus or metro. Tuesday's Express has a special Health and Fitness section, Thursday's Weekend ...

Arlington National Cemetary --- A Place for Emotion

A Long Walk

Amidst current politics, conflicts overseas, and a dwindling support for government all together, the solemn atmosphere of Arlington National Cemetery can level any playing field.  Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or whatever, you can't help but be moved.  The various names, dates on, and sheer number of markers will overwhelm your emotions.  It is a definite must see when ...

The weather is here ... at least temporarily

You've probably heard all about the heat wave here on the East Coast. In the DC area, the unseasonably mild weather's had the locals going around in shorts and T-shirts, and even a few cherry blossoms are reported to have popped. Normally, by this time of the year, we've had a few good snowfalls, the plows have come out, and there's sand on the roads. Wednesday was the first real cold ...

Happy New Year!...But before you light that cigar...

Well, Happy New Year everyone. Here in DC not only do we welcome in the new year but we also welcome in DC's smoking ban which took effect this past Tuesday...well, some of us welcome it.

Thank you for not smoking

Smoking in DC restaurants has been banned in the district since April, but on Tuesday the ban was extended to clubs and bars. Personally, as a non-smoker I appreciate this "breath of fresh air" and if my home state of New York is to be any indication of how successful the ban will be, then I am very excited about what this means for us.

Welcome to Washington, DC

Hello and welcome to the Washington, DC blog from hotelsbycity.net

My name is John and I've been living in DC since April of 2006. I am originally from New York and although a proud New Yorker, I am equally as proud to call DC my home. When I first moved here back in April I was very skeptical of our nations capitol, I tend to be skeptical of cities where bars ...
