Dallas' Best Clubs: The Balcony Club

If you want to get a feel of the funkiness that's beginning to disappear in East Dallas, or if you're looking for a sophisticated yet laid-back night out, and you don't mind some smoke, and especially if you enjoy jazz, and I mean the real stuff, your ticket is The Balcony Club. Adjacent to the 1930's-era Lakewood Theater, you'll really feel as though you've walked into a speakeasy, into an envelopingly comfortable dreamworld. The leaky faucet in the ladies' room attests to its authenticity, and you're sure to be charmed by the art deco style, especially by the mural opposite to the restrooms of Bambi, Thumper and his progeny, and one of the Seven Dwarves, reminding you that you are, indeed, on the enchanted balcony of a special theater. (If you're lucky, you may even get to brush by the evening's performer on the way, while they take a break.) This is a quietly legendary gem of Dallas, nestled in Lakewood Village, a charming center in its own right. Remember, though, it's about the music and the vibe, so, shh... speak easy.
