Dallas' Best Clubs: Gypsy Tea Room and Ballroom (on its way out)
If you're about to visit Dallas soon, and you're a fan of "alternative" rock, folk, roots, hip-hop, or soul music, then hurry! It's with the utmost grief that I report that the Gypsy Tea Room and Ballroom will host its last show March 31st. Although it's only been around for almost nine years, it's one of the last hallowed venues of the dying Deep Ellum district. (It's okay, really. Deep Ellum, the area just east of downtown, has a rich history unbeknownst even to most Dallasites, and it has died before, in the 1940s. The last renaissance began in the early 1980s, with artists, musicians, and other like minds moving [or squatting] there for the ample warehouse space, cheap rent, and opportunity at that time, and the city's capitalized on it pretty well since 1988. I'm a johnny-come-lately only because of age [I first went down there also in 1988, when I was fourteen-years-old], but I know it will rise yet again, however neutered it could be in the future.) This club has a lot of atmosphere going for it, and, obviously, it will be sorely missed.
