Think you can beat this weekend brunch for under ten bucks?

I highly doubt it. And if so then you're finding yourselves at some rather uninspiring places. Kick that hotel option to the curb and try the Metro Grill.

A recent visit to this higher end sports bar and grill resulted in a tummy well satisfied and a wallet not so broke. Although the brunch menu is small, a mere nine meal items, it is a rather inspired one. Smoked salmon scrambled eggs? Pulled pork with mushrooms and potatoes? Who do these guys think they are charging $7.95 for such high quality brunch items? And with side dishes no less.

I went simple and country style and ordered the biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage. I debated between that and the French toast but our server was adamant about the biscuits and how I'd be "silly not to order them." I gave in. At just $6.95, I had no feelings that I could have gone wrong.

My expectations were low since I am of the philosophy of getting what I pay for but they were also curious. What came out was an impressive and full plate. The biscuits, gravy, eggs and sausage were all of average taste but fresh and fulfilling. The biscuits were appropriately warm and fluffy with gravy poured over but never drenching them. The scrambled eggs were tasted perfect with no need for additional salt, although I felt the need to add ketchup. Had been a while and it sounded good at the time.

But what makes or breaks a breakfast/brunch place for me are two things. Sausage and coffee. And I ended up split here. The patties were delicious with an oh-so-slight hint of spice mixed with a touch of maple sweetness. The juicy patties were satisfying to the palate but could have been slightly bigger. The two diminuitive patties somewhat took away from the presentation of the ample helpings of the other meal items. What they lacked in size they made up for in taste.

The coffee seemed to be a hassle though. The server seemed surprise by me ordering that and refills were not prompt or plentiful. I asked for both of my refills. They seemed more bent on serving their Bloody Marys and Mimosas which were tempting at $2.50 each. While the coffee was fresh, the taste was nothing more than a simple blend that anyone could make at home. While not bad, I always hope for a little special something when paying over $2 for a smiple cup of joe.

These are minor criticisms though as the meal was filling and cheap.

My dining mate ordered the Eggs Your Way plate also priced at $6.95.  A practical platter filled with food came out much to the dismay of my fully stocked plate. Two scrambled eggs her way, home fries, fresh fruit, an English muffin and bacon weighed down her side of the table and it all looked good. I snuck a couple of tastes and it was. It's important to stress that both plates were delicious but with simple items came simple flavors and that's not a bad thing. I don't like my eggs messed with or my sausage (and bacon) suffering from culinary experimentation. What stuck out the most was how fresh and appropriately warm everything was.

That and the bill coming in just under $18. Nice place and a great meal for just that? I'll be back.

The Metro Grill is located at 4425 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, 75205. 214-261-6000.  Brunch is served 11am - 3pm Saturdays and Sundays. Also open for lunch and dinner.
