Rain comes and goes here in the Lone Star state and when it comes, it leaves many feeling housebound. There are several fun ways to pass the time when it's pouring cats and dogs. Here are some easy, affordable and educational options:

1. This artsy city has no shortage of art spaces, including the newest addition, the Blanton Museum of Art. This UT-based museum houses a variety of styles--from contemporary to classic European. Temporary exhibits are constantly revolving so keep your eye on their exhibition schedule for personal favorites.

2. The Harry Ransom Center, another feature of the University of Texas campus, houses more physical art specimens, like the antique Gutenberg Bible, the first photograph ever taken and the Watergate papers. History lovers and pop culture gurus will love this free 50-year-old cultural institution.

3. The Austin Museum of Art has two beautiful yet diverse locations. The downtown gallery is more traditional with touring exhibitions and a fantastic gift shop. The other location, known as Laguna Gloria, sits lakeside with several breathtaking outdoor sculptures. Laguna Gloria, once the home of businesswoman/playwright/avid gardener Clara Driscoll, also features exhibits inside what was once her home.

4. As the saying goes, everything's bigger in Texas, including the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. This magnificent three-story museum covers everything from the Alamo to current politics. Also found in this massive structure: Austin's only Imax theater--totally worth the trip.

5. Children of all sizes will enjoy the Dell-funded Austin Children's Museum downtown. The colorful, exciting space sparks every visitor's imagination--from the Austin Kiddie Limits karaoke stage to the various science-focused exhibits. The gift shop sells a great deal of entertaining and simultaneously educational toys.
