New Years Plans? How about First Night Austin!
With the Holidays almost over I can’t help but reflect on what will be looked upon as a “Great Year.” Since my Birthday falls on the 2nd of January I find that going out New Years just isn’t as much fun as it could be for this “almost” 26 year old blogger.
Being new to Austin, I hoped that I could find something that would intrigue my spontaneous side and decided this year I will be spending my New Year at Austin’s First Night. Located on 6th and Congress, this outdoor activity is fun for families and those looking to do something different for the Holiday!
For starters, all First Night events will be free. And the festivities will be a little more compact, with performances and exhibits running along Congress Avenue between Sixth and Cesar Chavez streets, a stretch to be closed to vehicular traffic from 2 p.m. to midnight. Previous years have been somewhat disorganized, but I am assured by this years organizers that much thought and planning has been put into this years festivities. Activities will again be staged around City Hall and on Auditorium Shores. The South First Street bridge will again be closed, with Lavaca, Guadalupe and Cesar Chavez streets around City Hall newly blocked off from traffic, along with Second Street between Congress and Guadalupe.
I have been told that over 100,000 people came downtown for last years celebration and found a wind variety of activities for the entire family to enjoy. With over 25 indoor and outdoor activities, this diverse array of performing and visual arts is sure to get this blogger ready for the New Year!
