Chappy's on Church on Father's Day batting .300....
My dear sweet wife of many years decided to take to Chappy's on Church for Father's Day. Chappy's on Church says that they "...specialize in New Orleans Creole cuisine and also serves steaks, veal, duck, quail, chicken, fish, shellfish, and oysters." Well they try, (full disclosure, this writer lived in New Orleans for about 20 years) but they don't quite deliver. Chappy's is very much a tourist place or similar to a franchise place. A lot of the meals have a name like "Honey Island Swamp Frog Leg" or "Mardi Gras Lamb Chop", which tells you right off the bat that this taste of New Orleans if for people that have never been to New Orleans or not likely to go. Because the cuisine is close buy not quite the real thing. Some of my guest with less discerning palates enjoyed their meal but noticed that the bread out with several flavored butters was incredible dry, as was the bread pudding. On top of that one of the dishes we ordered was forgotten and was only remembered when reminding the server to take that dish off of our bill which she cheerfully did so, after apologizing profusely. Chappy's on Church's decor is pleasant and the food portions ample enough to fill most stomachs. And the jazz band played quite well with the sound level just low enough to not hinder conversation.
So on final review, most people probably wouldn't mind paying about $20 per entree and would enjoy the atmosphere. Those who have an educated palate and have had a chance to experience the cuisine of Southeastern Louisiana, I would suggest they by-pass Chappy's, save up their money and make the trip to New Orleans.
