The Bluebird Café: A Must Visit Music Venue
The Bluebird Café may be one of Nashville’s smaller music venues, but its popularity is huge. “The Bluebird” has been home to dozens and dozens of famous songwriters and country musicians, since 1982. Well known artists such as: Tricia Yearwood, Pattie Griffin, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts have performed here. The Bluebird is not only a place to spot recognizable musicians, but to see songwriters perform their songs. Many great songwriters found their beginning at The Bluebird, and the walls of the venue are adorned with autographed pictures of all their previous musicians.
Check out the Bluebird on a Sunday night for their Sunday Writer’s Night (a tradition since 1985). This show is free and it’s a great chance to see some of today’s up-and-coming songwriters. The songwriters chosen for this show go through an audition process, so you’re seeing some of the best new talent.
Many of the shows at The Bluebird feature songwriters “in the round.” In the round refers to four musicians sitting in a circle, sharing songs. This provides a great, intimate show for the songwriters and the audience.
There are a few things to know about The Bluebird before going to a show. Most shows starting before 9 PM are free, but there is a cover for later shows (which usually feature well-known songwriters).
The Bluebird only accommodates 110 people and has only 21 tables. Don’t worry if you can’t find a seat when you arrive, there is extra seating in the form of church pews. This may sound strange, but the pews add a bit of Southern charm to the venue. To reserve a table, call the venue in advance. If you planning to attend a weekend show, call the Monday before.
The Bluebird has a varied menu, including appetizers, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Some favorites are Spanokopita (Greek style spinach and cheese pastries with Ranch dressing) and sweet potato fries. Although the food is pretty good for a music venue, the prices are a little steep and there is a $7.00 minimum.
Lastly, but most importantly, The Bluebird’s slogan is “Shhh!” It is important to remain quiet during a show at The Bluebird, because this venue is first and foremost a place for people to hear and share music.
