Morsels and more

What a fantastic idea Tim and Rhonda Morris had! The couple opened Morsels Market at 619 Front St. in Georgetown, and live-aboard boaters who stop at Georgetown on their journey up or down the Intracoastal Waterway are loving the gourmet selections.

Locals and land-arriving visitors are also enjoying the choice foods.

And what's not to love? Many downtown store proprietors come in at lunchtime to check out the cold case full of gourmet sandwiches such as Roast Beef and Gorgonzola; Barbecue Chicken; Corned Beef and Horseradish Cheddar; and Pastrami and Baby Swiss on Marble Rye. The breads are baked fresh daily and delivered by Benjamin's Bakery.

There's a big case of Boar's Head meats and cheeses, and another case with other brands of premium cheeses including brie, Asiago, Irish whiskey, gruyere, baby gouda and camembert. A cold case contains fine edibles such as fresh greens, pickles, clams, mussels, crawfish/Andouille ravioli, ice cream and quail.

Of course select beers and wines are sold, and the shelves of gourmet condiments, snacks, baking supplies and more are dazzling. Many of the brands are from South Carolina, or at least are regional. There are gourmet brownie mixes, tapenades, spices, benne wafers, grits, rice, chips, barbecue sauces and lots of different types of cookies - even Moravian cookies from Winston-Salem, N.C.

In addition to sandwiches, Morsels sells prepared foods such as Lowcountry Eggrolls filled with collards, country ham and shrimp, spinach dip and brownie dessert bars. There are also foods designed to be taken home and cooked, like beef tenderloin stuffed with spinach, shallots and portabello mushrooms.

Morsels Market is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The number is 527-3250. If you're standing on Front Street looking at the clock tower, Morsels is to the left of the tower.
