The International Center of the Upstate
The Upstate of South Carolina has become a "hub of international business and industry." It is attracting investments from around the globe. There are more than 215 international companies. Our area has the largest foreign investment per capita of any region in the United States.
The International Center of the Upstate promotes multicultural awareness and education. This enables citizens of the area to enjoy and learn more about our international residents and the diversity of their cultures.
The International Center of the Upstate is a non-profit organization that is devoted to promoting cross-cultural understanding among local and international residents of the Upstate. It is, definitively, a place where people of "all nationalities" can gather, establish friendships, be welcomed into the area and share their cultures, interests and needs with the citizens and businesses of Upstate South Carolina.
The International Center of the Upstate aids businesses by helping international employees and their families settle into the Upstate community, thus, supporting the success of overseas assignments. Hence, the ICU helps to promote the Upstate of South Carolina as a major international trade center.
The ICU has numerous methods of supporting our international community. They are...The Ambassador Program: Trained international representatives provide orientations for new employees and their families. Ambassadors are selected for their capability to speak the incoming family's native language.
Lectures, Workshops and Seminars: Programs on issues of international interest are offered to people in the international, local and business communities. Social Events: The ICU plans social events for the community and for members only, such as wine tastings, international dinners, film nights, dancing and much more. International Women's Club: The IWC of ICU meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month for conversation, lectures and demonstrations. Language Classes: Grammar and conversation classes, taught by native speakers, are offered in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and Japanese.
Interactive Website: The ICU website includes event and meeting schedules, contact names, ICU news, a bulletin board, and other resources and information. Business Seminars: Informative lectures on international business and cultural issues are tailored to the specific audience and business. Children's Programs: Volunteers plan playgroups, activities and school visits to discuss foreign countries and cultures. Community Festivals: The ICU plans and participates in a variety of Upstate events, festivals and fundraisers. The ICU is, currently, working on the development of a 'combined country' annual international festival. Presently, all international festivals are held during different months of the year.
