Life's a beach

"I love the smell of suntan lotion in the morning. It smells like...summer." Okay, so my statement doesn't have the same impact that Robert Duvall's had in Apocalypse Now, but in a land-locked city such as Pittsburgh, the chance to break out the swimtrunks and beachtowels is a noteworthy event.
It reached 93 degrees here on Sunday, so it was the perfect chance for me to go to the Wave Pool at Settler's Cabin. Settler's Cabin is a large park located about 15 minutes north of Pittsburgh as you're heading to the airport. Aside from the wave pool, it also has picnic groves, trails and other outdoor activities. Hence the name, the pool manufactures waves every 30 minutes or so. You can tell it's wave time when the bell goes off, or more accurately, by the screams and shouts of jubilant kids rushing into the water when the waves begin.
It's been years since I've been to the wave pool, and while it certainly hasn't changed much, there were a few things I noticed had changed.
First I'll explain the good changes: It was much easier getting there than I anticipated. It was right off of 376 with signs pointing me right to the entrance. I thought for sure I would get stuck in a construction zone.
Now for the bad changes: I'm definately getting too old for hanging out at the pool. When I was a kid I could spend all day out in the sun and not worry about sunburn. Yesterday, I had to pick a spot in the shade, lather myself in spf 30 sunblock and only spent about 2 hours outside before I was eager to get back home to the air conditioning. I guess cabana shorts and black socks up to my knees are in my near future.
