Dramatic Entrances
There are many advantages these days to avoiding airports and choosing instead traveling by car. Coming into Pittsburgh gives its own reward to visitors when they enter our city.
The most recognized view is coming in from the west through the Fort Pitt tunnels. You will also get this view if you drive in from the airport. You drive through a narrow dark enclosed space and suddenly you see the light, rivers, stadiums, and the city center in one magnificent overview.
Another way to enter the city is from the north by Route 279. This is its own form of wow as you see the strip development on the left, our impressive convention center in the foreground surrounded by the city on your right, and Mt. Washingtion as background on the far side of the rivers.
Coming from the east down Route 376, known as our Parkway, is yet another breath-taking view. A gradual turn in the road yields the city vista along the Monongahela River with Mt Oliver and Mt Washington in the background.
These entrances are perfect introductions to the visual feast awaiting you as you discover Pittsburgh, the city snuggled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.
