Ortlieb's Jazz Haus--The best place to hear jazz in the city
Ortlieb's Jazz Haus, located on 847 N. 3rd Street (3rd and Brown, between Spring Garden and Girard Streets), is arguably the best jazz club in Philadelphia. A nationally if not world-renowned jazz house, legendary jazz musicians from all over the country have come to play at Ortlieb's for the past 20 years.
Besides being a great place to hear jazz, Ortlieb's is also looking to become a fabulous dining experience. There is a new head chef, and I have already heard people raving about the crab cake sandwich at Ortlieb's. ("So juicy it didn't need sauce, and the bread was so warm!") Happy Hour is from 5-7pm Monday through Friday, and includes $1 off draught beers and appetizers.
There is only a cover charge at the door on Friday, Saturday, and Monday evenings.
If you stroll in on a Tuesday or a Sunday you will get to experience the legendary jam sessions, where esteemed jazz musicians come sit in with the famous Haus Band. Ortlieb's Haus Band was named the "Best Haus Band" in the "Best of Philly" issue of Philadelphia Magazine.
At Ortlieb's you will find great music, great food, a gorgeous interior, and lovely people. Ortlieb's does not get particularly noisy, either. It is a wonderful, wonderful venue if one is looking to hear some great jazz.
