The Centennial Grand Floral Parade
Yesterday I had the immense pleasure of being a part of Portland's Centennial Grand Floral Parade with the Beatles float. I was a groupie, dressed to the nines in my sixties gear and I had a BLAST. The weather could not have been worse (unless it had been snowing) and we STILL had fun. That tells you a bit about my group of friends!
We started at the Memorial Coliseum at 9:30am and it had already started raining. It was two hours later before we actually started "marching" along with the ginormous float. When we walked into the Coliseum, our group of friends actually paused to look at one another and say; "holy cow!" because there were so many people there. We didn't realize that we were going to have to parade through people like that, but it was a really amazing feeling.
Right after we left the indoor section of the parade, our float crashed into the crowd. No. Really. We ran over a little kid ... with the float! What a way to start the parade. The boy was okay, but still, a float ran him over! (We later learned that the Fred Meyer float (a few behind us) caught on fire at one point, too. What a normal Portland Saturday!) The rest of the parade went without a hitch, and the rain only made us stranger.
Imagine a group of 13 mid- to late-20-somethings dancing like loons through downtown Portland, soaking wet. Thankfully we were all dressed in (mostly) polyester and so we dried quickly once we were inside, but after hanging out for three hours in the rain, everything on us was soaking wet. However, if I never hear Can't Buy Me Love, Hard Day's Night or Yellow Submarine again, I'll die a happy woman!
Did any of you see us while we were being goofies out there?
