REI - Pearl District
1405 NW Johnson St
Portland, OR 97209
(503) 221-1938
I'm sure many or most of you know about REI and how the store (straight from the website) was founded as a cooperative in 1938 by a group of 23 Pacific Northwest mountaineers seeking quality climbing equipment. So I'm also assuming that you know it's the place to go if you want a wide selection of quality outdoor gear. Gear that you pay top dollar for. A "clearance sale" at REI generally means something is about 25% off, but that shouldn't stop you from dropping in and checking out this one in particular.
When you walk in you are immediately greeted by a pillar of what looks to be high quality granite. If no one else, rock climbers must appreciate this touch. I know, however, that parents do too. I've seen many a beleaguered mom or dad gratefully rescind responsibility of their kids to the waiting employee who, for around five bucks, instructs kids and whoever else wants a cheap thrill in how to wear a harness, lace up climbing shoes, and get up the moderate route. A great way to divert kids from the day-long shopping trek that downtown Portland can be for visitors.
The rest of the store is an REI. Browse around, spend your money, and anticipate the joy that using your new gear will bring, even if the purchasing of it brought a little pain to your wallet/purse.
