Bush honors BA resident after arriving in Oklahoma City
TINKER AFB --- Broken Arrow resident Dan Rooney was among two Oklahomans honored by President Bush Friday morning shortly after his arrival at Tinker Air Force Base.
Rooney is founder of The Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational opportunities for families of military members killed or disabled in action.
The president introduced Rooney as "the major here, a golf pro, who has served and used his position to raise money."
"Our country is better of because millions of Americans have heard the call," Bush said. "Thank you all for what you do and God bless you."
Bush also recognized Karen Stark of Edmond, founder of the Hugs Project. Stark presented the president with a "cooling tie" --- a polymer infused bandanna worn by military personnel to ward off heat.
Air Force One arrived shortly after 9 a.m. Friday. In his short time at Tinker, Bush addressed the impending arrival of Hurricane Ike on the Texas coast.
"I suspect there's going to be some Texans headed to Oklahoma and I know they will find some good people up here," Bush said.
Bush spent fewer than 10 minutes at Tinker, before leaving to attend a conference at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and
