Charlotte's annual July 4th event is long on the Family Fun this year with family-friendly activities from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. The event is alcohol-free but there will be food and soft drinks on sale.

The Juneteenth Festival Of The Carolinas will take place this weekend. Juneteenth, for those not in the know, is the oldest national celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865, the commemoration of the end of slavery on June 19 has taken root in many communities nationwide.

A Charlotte-area teacher was caught by his principle preparing to inject heroin into his arm earlier this week. George McDonald, who taught art at two area elementary schools, was arrested after the principle opened his locked classroom door to find him strapping his arm.

I'm one of the lucky souls who works a job I love with hours I love. I don't have to get to work until around 10 or 10:30, and I usually stay at work until 6:30 or 7:00, so I generally miss Charlotte's wretched traffic scene. Today, however, I had to leave a little early, and I was stuck in the hellish nexus that is Charlotte's uptown at 5:00.

Finally - a cause we can give our complete support to.
A group calling itself Friends of the Five Day Weekend is trying to convince Congress to change the way Americans work: toss out the five-day workweek and allow hardworking Americans a little more down time - preferably in western North Carolina.
