Charlotte's Philosopher's Stone
The Philosopher's Stone Tavern is one of those rare jewels of a neighborhood pub: friendly staff, delicious food, and reasonable prices all come together to make for a wonderful evening out on the town.
When I first moved to Charlotte, I lived in an apartment complex near the tavern, which is located at the intersection of 7th St. and Pecan (1958 E. 7th St. Charlotte, NC 28204). We'd walk up there most evenings for a beer, a game of ping pong or pool, or to sit out at the picnic table and chat. The crowd is generally young and professional, and the food is interesting and eclectic without being snobby.
The outdoor patio is perhaps the bar's most attractive element, with its open tables and ping-pong set up.
From pub favorites like the cheese chippers to one of the best veggie burgers in town, the food is worth the trip. The reasonably priced drinks also make it a favorite watering whole for local regulars.
The bar has an unusual set-up in that there is a front and a back bar. The front bar is attached to the restaurant facility, but exit through the patio, and you'll find another bar in the back with pool tables, video games, and a laid-back atmosphere.
There is live music outside on Sunday evenings and occasionally in the back bar on other nights. Check their website for more information.
While you're in town, don't get stuck in the uptown high-prices and hectic atmosphere. Located just a few blocks from uptown, The Philosopher's Stone is worth the short ride.
