Located in Rochester, New York's East End, Spot Coffee can be found in the former Hallman Chevrolet building on the corner of East Avenue and Matthews Street. The unique location provides a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, whether you visit Spot for lunch meetings, hanging out with friends, or an interesting place to work.

Spot features a large wrap-around coffee bar in the center of the first floor, with coffee drinks, desserts, and a sandwich menu available. Tables of all sizes are available, from smaller two-tops along the windows to larger tables perfect for meetings. A large curtained area is located along one wall with comfortable couches for more privacy, and a smaller seating area is along the opposite wall, as long as tables along the rail on the second floor. During nice weather, Spot also has outside seating available.

For those looking for a place to work, Spot offers free WiFi connectivity. It isn't unusual to visit on a weeknight and see a mixture of customers, from college students from the nearby University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music, to suited executives at an after-hours meeting, to visitors looking for a great cup of coffee and more interesting place to break out the laptop. The coffee is excellent, with a large variety of coffee and tea drinks available as well as other choices, and the desserts are delicious and generously sized. My companion and I didn't get a chance to sample the other offerings, but several students appeared to be dinner regulars.

Spot is within walking distance of several Rochester attractions, including the Eastman Theatre and Little Theater. On-street parking surrounds Spot, and a parking lot is located across Matthews Street for a reasonable fee. Hours vary, so it may be advisable to call to check earlier in the day or later at night to verify opening and closing times.

Located on South Clinton Avenue, just minutes from downtown Rochester, New York, the Highland Park Diner is conveniently located to many Rochester attractions, including historic Highland Park (with its annual Lilac Festival), the Monroe Avenue shopping district, the Cinema Theater, and Park Avenue.

The Highland Park Diner is an historic 1948 Orleans diner (the kind you see on Food Network that look like Airstream trailers). In 1986, it was redone with an Art Deco style, giving it an eclectic look that adds to the restaurant's ambiance. Typical diner fare is served, with breakfast available until 3 PM each day. The Highland Park Diner is open 7 days a week, with breakfast only served on Sundays.

I was a frequent patron of the Highland Park Diner when I lived in Rochester's Upper Monroe Neighborhood, but haven't been there for several years. During a recent afternoon at the Lilac Festival, I was able to visit there again, and was pleased to find that the food and service were just as good as I remembered. Portions were generous and the food was excellent, no matter which meal you chose: of my party of five, four had lunch, but I had a former breakfast favorite, which isn't to be missed!

One of the Highland Park Diner's signature breakfasts is the banana bread French toast. Three thick slices of banana bread are dipped in batter and fried, and served with a whole sliced banana and banana butter. The portion is enormous, and I took half home for breakfast the next day. The Reuben sandwiches are also great, piled high with a generous serving of corned beef. The shakes are another don't-miss.

Whether you are looking for something different from the standard festival fare after a trip to the Lilac Festival in May, or just looking for great food in an historic setting, the Highland Diner is a great, affordable restaurant.

Mykonos Cafe, located in Winton Place in Brighton, New York, just minutes from downtown Rochester, is a 24-hour diner with a mixture of typical diner fare as well as Mediterranean favorites.

Formerly located in the hip, urban Village Gate, Mykonos moved to their new location in 2005 and reinvented itself as a 24-hour restaurant, serving standard breakfast-through-dinner dinner food as well as Greek cuisine, making it an easy place to eat with a family that may include finicky children.

A recent trip to Mykonos confirmed that the food is decent, if not extraordinary. A children's menu includes perennial kid favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and grilled cheese, and include fries, a drink, and a dessert item. For the grown-ups, a large selection of sandwiches, salads, wraps, pitas, and Greek favorites makes up the varied menu, as well as breakfast items available around the clock.

The food is decent, if not extraordinary, with average portion sizes and fair prices. The desserts are excellent, and will tempt you from the display case when you enter the restaurant. Mykonos also features a full bar and daily specials. Even with the bar, however, the restaurant is very family-friendly, with coloring pages and crayons available for little ones, as well as high chairs and boosters.

Mykonos is located in the middle of a plaza called Winton Place, near two major expressways. Reservations are recommended on weekends, and outdoor dining is avaialable, weather permitting. Mykonos is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and also has a full takeout menu available.

Looking for more of a relaxing hike in natural surroundings? Mendon Ponds Park, located in Honeoye Falls, New York, about 20 minutes from downtown Rochester, is a fun trip for families.

Wild Wings, an animal rescue organization dedicated to birds of prey, is located within in the park (which is a part of the Monroe County Parks system), and provides a home for injured hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey who would otherwise have perished. Volunteers from the organization provide guided tours of the bird's living space during designated hours, as well as educating school groups. The birds can also be viewed without a guide by following the path around the bird enclosure.

The park itself also has 2500 acres containing trails for horseback riding, woods, ponds, wetlands, and the Bird Song Trail, which begins right near the Wild Wings area. Sunflower seed packs are available for purchase at the gift shop, and if you stop along the trail and hold the seed in your outstretched palm, chickadees will perch right on your hand to take the seed. Other song birds, including cardinals, can be spotted on the trail, but the chickadees are the most friendly.

A sensory garden is also located at the park directly behind the former nature center which is now maintained by Wild Wings. Picnic tables are available for snacks or lunch, and shelters are available for rental through the Monroe County Parks system.
