New York Concerts On Sale This Week: John Mayer, Vampire Weekend, Cheap Trick, Yeasayer, Imogen Heap

There's no off season in the New York concert scene, and there are plenty of good shows coming up later this year and early in 2010. Here are some upcoming in-demand shows that have tickets going on sale this week:

Going on sale Wednesday, November 18th:
* Imogen Heap, Music Hall of Williamsburg - show date Dec. 3

Going on sale Friday, November 20th:
* Vampire Weekend, United Palace (Upper Manhattan) - show dates Jan. 17, 18, 19

* Yeasayer - show dates Feb. 8 (Bowery Ballroom), Feb. 9 (Music Hall of Williamsburg)

* Dropkick Murphys, The Wellmont Theatre - show date Feb. 24

Going on sale Saturday, November 21st:
* John Mayer and Michael Franti & Spearhead, Madison Square Garden - show date Feb. 20
* Cheap Trick, The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza - show date Jan. 25

And if you're looking for a show to attend sooner rather than later, additional tickets have been released for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, November 24.

You can ring in the new year with the most successful female recording artist of all time, Mariah Carey, when she plays a special concert at Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve 2009. You'll get to hear a wide range of her songs from throughout her long career, including tunes from her latest album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, which features the hit songs "Obsessed" and "H.A.T.E.U." 

Tickets go on sale Saturday, November 14 at 11AM, and you can get Mariah Carey New Year's Eve tickets directly from the Madison Square Garden ticket office.

Apple Opens Upper West Side Store Nov. 14th

Apple is opening another store in New York City, this time on the Upper West Side, and it opens for business on Saturday, November 14th. The store, at 1981 Broadway and 67th Street, extends the reach of the popular computer and electronics seller further uptown. Until now, the furthest north one could find an Apple Store in Manhattan was at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, by the F.A.O. Schwartz toy store.

The store opens on Saturday at 10 a.m., and the grand opening will feature free T-shirts for the first 2,500 visitors. You'll find details on hours, appointments, and other information on the Upper West Side Apple Store at the store's Web site, www.apple.com/retail/upperwestside.

Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, NYC - One Big Street Party

The 2009 Greenwich Village Halloween Parade takes place Saturday night, October 31st, starting at 7 p.m. There are great places to watch all along the parade route; see the official Web site above for details. And you can still be part of the parade, too!

Yes, the recession has forced the Parade to downsize somewhat, but some folks have stepped up with additional funding to ensure that this long-running Halloween tradition can continue in the style in which participants and spectators have come to expect.

The 2009 Greenwich Village Halloween Parade begins on Spring Street and Avenue of the Americas, and continues north to 22nd Street.

And the weather should cooperate, too... the rain clouds seem to be clearing out, and the Sun has even been spotted in NYC and environs. Temperatures are pretty mild for late October. Get out there and enjoy!

The results for the 2009 ING New York City Marathon are in, and you can view them at the official NYC Marathon race results page here. You can search by name, bib number, or other fields, or enter information in more than one field to narrow down the results.

The 2009 NYC Marathon was held on Sunday, November 1st, 2009, with approximately 40,000 runners participating. Congrats to men's race winner Meb Keflezighi, the first American man to win the race since 1982. See more on his victory here:

This Sunday, Nov. 1st is the 40th running of the New York City Marathon. What started as a few loops in Central Park has grown to be one of the most-anticipated events of the year in the running world, leading runners through five boroughs of the City. About 35,000 participants of all ages and abilities will step off of Staten Island and embark on a journey that they will never forget.

Times Square Rally for Yankees World Series - Today, Oct. 28, at 12:30!

The New York Yankees are set to begin their quest for another World Series title Wednesday night, and the city is holding a pep rally to get people revved up! See the official Web site for details on the Yankees Times Square rally, but here are the basics:

* Location and time: The Yankees Pep Rally will be held on Broadway between 44th Street and 45th Street at 12:30 PM.
* NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg will be there, as will Michael Kay, who does Yankees play to play on the YES Network.
* The press release says "weather permitting," but as of 10:30 a.m. the rally is ON. Check the Web site above for the latest updates.
* The first game of the World Series is set for 7:57 p.m. tonight, shown on Fox TV (channel 5 in the New York area). The weather forecast calls for light rain, but as always the weather is unpredictable.

Built from 9/11 Steel, USS New York Heads for its Namesake City

The USS New York, a naval ship that includes metal salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, is headed for the city it is named after. According to the USS New York's blog, was scheduled to leave New Orleans Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. According to the site, the ship's bow stem "contains about 7 1/2 tons of steel from the World Trade Center, felled during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks."

This USS New York is set to arrive in New York City on November 7th, where it is to be commissioned, and then will head for its home port of Norfolk, Virginia. You can find out much more at the official USS New York Web site, www.ussnewyork.com.

NYC Ballet's "Nutcracker" Now On Sale for 2009-2010

Tickets for the New York City Ballet's production of George Balanchine's "The Nutcracker" went on sale Sept. 28th. While it's supposed to be close to 80 degrees today, it's never too soon to plan ahead to see this popular seasonal favorite. Shop for NYC Ballet "Nutcracker" tickets early because demand is always high and the best seats will sell out before you know it.

Shows start on November 27th and run through January 3rd, and tickets start at just $20.

Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Screening Part of 2009 NYFF

This year's New York Film Festival will include a screening of "The Wizard of Oz" to celebrate its 70th anniversary. The screening will be on September 26th at 11 a.m., and as of now there may still be some tickets left.
