NYC Transit Fare Hike: Yes? No? Maybe?

A few days ago the fears became real: it was announced that the MTA, the agency that runs the public transportation in New York City and area, would have to raise fares a lot to fill a huge budget shortfall. In short, the one-way fare on NYC subways and buses would go up more than 20%, from $2.00 to $2.50. Similar increases were proposed for monthly, ten-trip, and other multiple-ride passes.

And that seemed to be a done deal. Or was it? It's been reported today that the state government in Albany is looking to stave off the NYC fare increases with some kind of aid package to the City. The article notes that Governor David Paterson and state legislators have "acknowledged the pressure on them since the authority's [MTA's] board ratified a 'doomsday' budget Wednesday."

So it looks like the fare hike may be avoided after all. Which is good news for anyone who rides the New York City buses and trains, the Long Island Rail Road, and the Metro North commuter trains.
