2008 U.S. Open Tennis - Lots of Great Action for Monday, Sept. 1st
While the rest of American is barbecuing, the titans of world tennis will be laboring in the third and fourth rounds of the 2008 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadow, Queens.
There have been some upsets thus far, and Monday's action has some good matchups, especially in the day session. I'm pretty happy about this, because Monday is the one day I'll be attending the U.S. Open this year. (You can find the entire schedule of play here: www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/schedule/schedule14.html )
There's an interesting matchup right off the bat at 11 a.m. on Arthur Ashe Court. American Mardy Fish, fresh off his upset of fellow American (and good friend) James Blake, is in the fourth round at the Open for the first time and is taking on Gael Monfils of France, seeded 32.
Next up on Ashe is number-one seed Rafael Nadal taking on Sam Querrey of the U.S. I pray that Querrey will not be beaten so badly that he will be unable to lift a hot dog to his mouth to celebrate his holiday.
Up next on the main court is women's fourth-round action as Venus Williams, the seventh seed, takes on Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. the ninth seed.
Over on the Louis Armstrong Court, other women's singles matches feature Dinara Safina (sister of Marin Safin), the number six seed, against Anna-Lena Groenfeld of Germany. Flavia Pennetta of Italy (16th seed) takes on former top-ten player Amelie Mauresmo of France, now seeded 32.
Serena Williams, the four seed, goes up against Severine Bremond of France in the first match of the evening session, beginning at 7 p.m. on the Arthur Ashe Court. This is a fourth round match.
The second key match of the evening is a men's fourth round contest between rising British star Andy Murray of Scotland, seeded sixth, against Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, seeded 10th.
This will be a great day of tennis as the U.S. Open begins its second and final week. If you're a tennis fan, take some time out from the barbecue to turn on the TV and check out the matches. Should be lots of fun. And happy Labor Day!
