2008 Macy's 4th of July Fireworks in NYC

The Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show is one of the most spectacular displays in the country, and here are the details on where, when, and how to see it.

The Macy's Fourth of July fireworks Web site (see link below) lists the starting time as 9 p.m. on Friday, July 4th, but usually the first shells aren't fired until 9:20 or so. This site also tells where the best viewing sites are and gives directions on how to get there. Macy's says it is the largest fireworks show in the country, and it is visible from all around NYC, including New Jersey.

The fireworks barges are located on the East River (east of Manhattan), with one display set up in the river south of the Brooklyn Bridge, near the tip of lower Manhattan, and several more further north, extending up to around 23rd St.

The FDR Drive on the east side will be closed to traffic from Houston St. to 42nd St., so that people can view the fireworks. This location gives an up-close view, but it will get pretty crowded... it depends on your tolerance for crowds.

A musical soundtrack to the fireworks will be broadcast on the radio on 1010 WINS A.M., or you can watch the fireworks show on TV on NBC at 9 p.m., featuring a concert with Kenny Chesney, Natasha Bedingfield, and Katherine McPhee.
