The 2008 Coney Island Mermaid Parade

There's only one Coney Island, and there's only one Mermaid Parade... and it's today, June 21st. At the parade you'll find a King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, plenty of mermaids in costume, plus walking sea creatures, antique cars, marching bands and much more.

The Mermaid Parade calls itself the "nation's largest art parade," but it's also a celebration of the arrival of the summer, all with wild costumes and a Mardi Gras feel (which is not surprising, since Coney Island used to hold its own Mardi Gras celebration from 1903 to 1954).

The 2008 Mermaid Parade begins at 2 p.m.; you can find out all the details at the official Mermaid Parade Web site, http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml. There you'll find an FAQ with all the things you've ever wanted to know about the Mermaid Parade, who this year's King and Queen are, how to attend the Mermaid Parade Ball, and much more.
