Ikea Comes to Brooklyn
Brooklyn, a borough famous for its unique culture and history, made a bit of unusual history yesterday when the first Ikea store in New York City opened in the Red Hook section.
It seems kind of odd, a Swedish home-furnishings store in the borough known for the Brooklyn Dodgers and its own distinctive accent, but maybe the lilt of the Swedish accent blended in well this morning at the grand opening.
Instead of the customary ribbon-cutting photo op to open the store, Ikea Brooklyn opened with a log sawing, said to be a traditional Swedish ceremony to bring good luck.
Some shoppers weren't leaving good luck to a log sawing, though: a number of people started camping out in a line outside the store as early as Monday to get a shot at giveaways and other deals.
