Wards Island Bridge Over Harlem River To Wards Island Park
Most visitors to NYC will, in fact, see a very small part of the whole mosaic that is the city. Visitors to the metro area will generally stay well within the confines of midtown and points south, but there are rewarding sights to be seen if you are adventurous enough to travel farther afield. Wards Island Bridge is located at East 103rd street crossing over the FDR drive. Arriving, you are treated to a magnificent view of the length of the East River, north and south under a wide open sky framed by the Eastside's distinctive skyline. Once across you find yourself on a hidden gem of an island, complete with wide open park grounds, biking and running trails, a stadium and fantastic walks along the river. Spring and summer weekends will find families picnicing, and biking the virtually empty bike paths, as well as dog owners enjoying the wide open fields. The fishing is exceptional and you can always find a spot to settle down with rod and wheel.  Nature lovers will enjoy observing the native wildlife; geese, ducks, song birds and even marine life, such as fiddler crabs who frequent the edges of the island. Wards Island Park is well worth a visit for anyone who wants a taste of NYC out of the ordinary. Â
