Offbeat Ideas For Valentine's Day in New York
If you're like me and tired of overpriced, pre-fixe Valentine's Day dinners or fattening boxes of chocolate, then try opting for some of these ideas instead:
1. Champagne and a Movie:
Instead of popcorn and Raisinettes, spice up your movie routine with a bottle of bubbly. You'll be surprised to learn just how easy it is to sneak one into a movie theater. Then sit back, relax and time your cork-popping accordingly (loud action sequences usually help). Once the lights are dimmed, you're ready to toast. Cheers!
2. Have Your Mate Seeing Stars:
The Rose Center For Earth And Space (Central Park West & 79th St, 212-769-5100, www.amnh.org/rose) features the new Hayden Planetarium, where you can take in a space show and witness dazzling images in the sky without having to go outside! Robert Redford narrates the current show which runs every half-hour.
3. Take a Romantic Stroll:
As temperatures finally begin to thaw, cure that cabin fever with a nice romantic stroll around town. One of my favorite spots is Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. While conditions are not exactly ideal for sunbathing yet, there's nothing wrong with buttoning up and taking in some fresh ocean air. With nary a crowd in sight, you can fully take advantage of the pristine setting and truly get away from it all; maybe even feed a sea gull or two. And when the sun goes down, sample a bit of nightlife at one of the many Russian night clubs that line Brighton Beach Avenue. (Q/B Train to Brighton Beach Ave.)
