Food, Wine and Opera in Murray Hill

If you're looking for a festive place with a touch of romance, head to Rossini's restaurant in Murray Hill (108 E.38th St, 212-683-0135, www.rossinisrestaurant.com).

Established in 1977, Rossini's immediately transforms you back to the days of polyester and bellbottoms - from the old-fashioned decor and waiters' uniforms (part of its charm) to the nostalgic photos on the wall. Past customers include a bevy of noted New Yorkers such as Rudy Giuliani and Joe Franklin. Even J-Lo stopped by for a bowl of pasta as she pointed out in her autographed picture.

Pasta is a definite standout on the Northern Italian restaurant's extensive menu. I opted for a hearty portion of the Gnocchi Bolognese after a couple of tasty starters: the Gamberi Freddi (aka shrimp cocktail) were plump and fresh and accompanied by a tangy side of cocktail and tartar sauce. The Melanzane Rippiene were stuffed with a creamy helping of ricotta cheese; 3 slices made it ideal for sharing.

And what would an Italian meal be without wine? The house Pinot Grigio was light and perfectly dry; a fine accompaniment to any pasta choice.

Rossini's Restaurant, New York CityOn Saturday evenings, Rossini's offers live opera during dinner, including selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera". Grab a banquette, snuggle up with your date and settle in for a romantic evening (the cozy bar area also offers additional seating, as well as dimmer, softer lighting). And if you're celebrating a birthday, you can certainly expect a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the singers, as well as from the wait staff.

Service at Rossini's is gracious and unrushed; whether you're an established customer from the neighborhood or tourists from out of town, you're guaranteed service with a smile at Rossini's.

(Reservations strongly recommended.)

The restaurant sounds great. Food, wine, and live music as well! I must get my boyfriend to take me there on a Saturday night! It looks romantic, and it's in a real neighborhood, not too touristy.

Is there a menu published anywhere?...it's not on their website or yours. Would also like to see the prices.
