Cawfee Talk in New York City

If you're looking for a good cup of coffee in the morning in New York City, forget about Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Just head up the street to a nearby coffee cart and you're bound to get a nice cup of joe.

On weekday mornings, locals in the know line up for their daily caffeine fix. Frequent customers like myself are greeted with a smile by the friendly vendors.Sam the Coffee Guy We need not utter a word - they always know how we take our coffee. And the prices? They're a steal! $1 can buy you a small coffee and a jumbo-sized donut. Chocolate sprinkles are my personal favorite; and unlike Krispy Kremes, you don't need to eat more than one.

I always shake my head in disbelief when I see flocks of tourists head into a Starbucks. The coffee is overpriced and doesn't necessarily taste so great. A friend of mine is constantly bringing hers back because of the bitter taste. Dunkin' Donuts is not much better; during two recent visits, I found the coffee to have a burny aftertaste.

So if you plan on visiting Manhattan, skip the lackluster java chains. Instead of making them richer and becoming a statistic, try helping the little guys. You'll not only get better coffee, you'll have faster service - ideal for when you're on the go taking in the sights of New York City.

(Note: Coffee carts generally operate till approximately 12pm).

You're so right! I have trouble getting a good, relatively inexpensive cup of java that is actually hot. Everywhere I go it's not good. Except for the carts! There's a reason for the long lines in front of my office building every morning: the good hot coffee just the way you like it. Even in Brooklyn, where I work, the coffee cart is just the thing to start the day right. And it's true what you say about Starbuck's and Dunkin' Donuts: they're not that good.

True! The coffee carts are great. When I was working in the Wall Street area I went to one every day. I think I developed a crush on the coffe cart guy. It was so amazing how he could remember all those orders. Nobody would even say anything. A crowd would form and people would just nod. He would know exactly what they wanted and serve it up in the blink of and eye.

Just this morning I went to my usual Court Order Cafe for my usual over-priced overly large cup of mediocre coffee. I went upstairs, opened my cover and prepared to sip my really hot coffe(how I like it). It was tepid. Is it the coffee containers or the urns that don't keep the coffee hot? Enough is enough! I went back downstairs, headed for the cawfeecart and brought back a delightfully hot good cuppa joe. Now that's more like it. Right on!
