Cawfee Talk in New York City
If you're looking for a good cup of coffee in the morning in New York City, forget about Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Just head up the street to a nearby coffee cart and you're bound to get a nice cup of joe.
On weekday mornings, locals in the know line up for their daily caffeine fix. Frequent customers like myself are greeted with a smile by the friendly vendors. We need not utter a word - they always know how we take our coffee. And the prices? They're a steal! $1 can buy you a small coffee and a jumbo-sized donut. Chocolate sprinkles are my personal favorite; and unlike Krispy Kremes, you don't need to eat more than one.
I always shake my head in disbelief when I see flocks of tourists head into a Starbucks. The coffee is overpriced and doesn't necessarily taste so great. A friend of mine is constantly bringing hers back because of the bitter taste. Dunkin' Donuts is not much better; during two recent visits, I found the coffee to have a burny aftertaste.
So if you plan on visiting Manhattan, skip the lackluster java chains. Instead of making them richer and becoming a statistic, try helping the little guys. You'll not only get better coffee, you'll have faster service - ideal for when you're on the go taking in the sights of New York City.
(Note: Coffee carts generally operate till approximately 12pm).
