This town is buzzing. A lot of people equate Buffalo to snow. We do, however, get a lot of comments about our near-misses in sports- Super Bowl, Stanley Cup losses. But this city keeps plugging along. I think this time we "got it". The 2006/07 Sabres are on fire, now in their 2nd round of playoffs against the NY Rangers (at this pont we're 2-0). And everyone is excited. The HSBC Arena has been sold out since a few hours after tickets for the playoffs went on sale. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Arena now has the "Party in the Plaza" right outside the doors. Bands, celebrites, and, most important of all, the game in real time on a giant TV screen. The picture included here is from the 2nd night, 4/20 (big thanks to my friend Roza for the photo). There were 3,500 people there. Yes, Buffalo's a bit happy....

Dinner tonight at The Century Grill.
The food is fantastic. We have eaten there before, so I have sampled several of the dishes. This evening I had the grilled salmon, with sides of vegetables and rice. The fish was grilled to perfection; a spiced grilled surface, and pink and tender inside. The vegetables were an interesting mix- green and waxed beans with carrots, red peppers and onions.
In the past I have tried their soups and salads, and the chicken sausage sandwich, which my husband enjoyed tonight. He also mentions that the chicken wings (at home here in Buffalo), are quite plump and tasty.
All of the portions are huge with a real homemade taste. The staff is friendly and accommodating- you'll even see the owner, Otis , serving up dishes...
The restaurant can be found at 320 Pearl Street, across the street from the Hyatt hotel in Buffalo. The building it is located in was built in 1904, and the interior reflects the date. All original wood floors, and tin ceiling. A really comfortable atmosphere for dinner, or for nightlife. The upper floor once housed a blues club, but recently hosted The Goo Goo Dolls (old friends with the owner) during the recording of their latest album "Let Love In".

Buffalo is in a really good mood these days. Yesterdays win over the Washington Capatals secured the Sabres home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The playoff tickets for the entire playoff run are sold out. The organization, however, is going to have playoff parties outside of the Arena which will include a large screen playing the entire game. As soon as the weather warms up around here (most of New England got hit with frigid temperatures this past week), I know where I'll be spending a lot of time...

My husband and I were at two tried and true eating establishments today , one for breakfast, the other, dinner. As always, both fantastic.

Breakfast was Sharon's Apple Dumpling Diner, a bit off the beaten track at 2466 Elmwood Avenue. It's technically in Kenmore, but right on the Buffalo border on a main thoroughfare. Sharon is the owner and the main cook, making her homemade recipes for excellent breakfasts. I enjoyed her Apple Walnut Raisin Buckwheat Pancakes, complete with a cider-cinnamon syrup, and my husband the Turtle Pancake special with nuts, and both milk and white chocolate chunks baked in. Both dishes were great as usual. Sharon is a great host- customers feel at home soon after entering the unique atmosphere.

For dinner we headed to Marco's Italian Restaurant, located at 1085 Niagara Street, right near the Peace Bridge (that's the bridge to Ft. Erie, Canada) entrance. Again, a very friendly place near a very Italian neighborhood. Entrees have a wide range in price; sandwiches $5- $9.50, Full pasta meals in the teens, and the portions are gigantic (my leftover Chicken Cacciatore will last for 2 more meals). The sauce has a hint of sweetness, and is quite authentic. They also have pizza and wings and a children's menu with nothing priced over $5. Marco's also houses an Italian deli with a wide range of sandwiches (written as "Sangwich" on the menu), soups, salads and custom party platters. Check their website for a complete menu and an invite to email for a coupon. Wow, I'm still full...

As I write this, the story on the news is the development plan for the Buffalo waterfront.
The terminus of the Erie Canal was uncovered, and after some "persuasion" by preservationists, it was restored. There have been plans in the works for YEARS, and finally it looks like we're ready. The Bass Pro sporting goods company has unveiled plans for its Buffalo store (pictured), and it will be an anchor for the waterfront village. Other plans include retail, restaurants, a naval museum, an aquarium and a hotel. Many a Buffalonian has been waiting for news like this - another great reason to visit us here!

Many think that hockey is a Canadian sport, and Buffalo, right on the border, fits right in. ESPN had a poll to find the best sports franchise (NFL, MLB, NHL AND NBA) based on several factors, including fan relations, stadium experence, ownership and coaching. The Sabres came in first there as well. Being a hockey fan in Buffalo is especially sweet this season...

My name is Val, and I will be taking you on a virtual trip, in the blog world, to the city I love and believe in. I purchased a home here around 7 years ago. Family and friends live here; I met my husband here. I'm in it for the long haul.

The city is on the cusp of revitalization, with many projects, both business and residential, taking the town by storm. I'll be letting you in on all of the secrets of this great town. The first of which is how great spring is here......
