Wild River Grille

My boyfriend left town yesterday for three weeks, so the other night we went out for a little farewell dinner.  I wore my new heels; he wore a clean shirt.  Apparently he didn't get the memo on the evening's dress code.  And where did he feel like eating?  "Someplace with good beer."  I like a low maintenance man.

My challenge was this: Taking into account our mismatched date night attire, as well as the fact that I was interested more in solid food than beer, could I find a restaurant special enough for me, yet, um, rustic enough for my boyfriend?  Mission accomplished.

The Wild River Grille is located in downtown Reno where E.J.'s Jazz Cafe used to be.  While the dinner menu is a little pricey, I really enjoyed my New York Strip, and my boyfriend was happy with both his pork chops and his Ruby Mountain Amber Ale- or so I could assume by the way his little beer mustache glistened beneath the dim lights as he smiled at me from across the table.

Was it the best meal I've had in Reno?  Certainly not.  But with its downtown location and sophisticate, yet relaxed atmosphere, it was a great choice for a memorable meal.

Good assessment of the Wild River Grille. Nice atmosphere... so-so food.
I ate there during its grand opening, and the service really wasn't what one would expect when an eatery is trying to make a good first impression, and neither was the meal. Over the past half-year, the service has gotten better, but the food is still about the same.

The exception: the raspberry and salmon pastries. To die for!
